Dark Age Britain 486 AD

Hwyll the Wily is an Uchelwyr with lands East of the Severn (Afon Hafren).  The Saxons and Angles have united under the command of their Warlords, Raedwald and Aelle threatening to attack his lands, stealing his herds, burning his crops and enslaving his peasants.  He has appealed to his overlord, the King of Powys but to no avail.  Calling on an ambitious young Dumnonian Warlord, Geraint he has offered to become his loyal subject if he can defend him against his foes.

Two opposing sides will therefore meet in battle.

The Field of Battle

A quiet post Roman village.  A Church (large building) at a crossroads.  Outside a Bard and a Priest are engaged in debate and children are playing.  Some Welsh villagers have constructed a wattle and daub dwelling (standard building) nearby with a pig pen in order to farm the land.  Fields of crops are growing which pose no obstruction as the open ground is firm.  However there are woods which count as high area terrain and an open field surrounded by a low wall which provides hard cover and acts as an obstacle to those crossing.  The marsh is low uneven terrain, the hills high open terrain and the river is impassable, forming the west table edge.   To the invaders the place is known as Eccles and to the locals as Ecclesia, because of the presence of the fine stone Church built by the Romans in earlier times.

Victory Points

Scored for killing enemy figures.  1 coin per levy, two per warrior, three per Hearthguard and nine per Warlord.  The individual player who scores the most VP by the end of the game will be victorious.  Tales of their might and prowess will be told throughout Britain.

Geraint, A Prince of Dumnonia

Outcome

Darryl:  Aelle and the Angles 49.

Mike: Raedwald and the Saxons 47.

Andy:  Geraint and the British 32.

Phil:  Hwyll and the Welsh 30.
